BROOKINGS, S.D. – The North Dakota State men’s track and field team won two individual championships and opened a slight lead in the team race on the opening day of the Summit League Indoor Championships on Saturday.

The Bison have 64 points after five events, leading South Dakota State’s 56.5 points and South Dakota’s 50.

Alex Talley led a Bison sweep of the top three places in the weight throw, winning the Summit League title at 72 feet, 0.25 inches. NDSU's Brandon Lewis won the long jump in 24-02.25.

Jakob Hanna earned a runner-up place in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 8 minutes, 18.42 seconds. It's thefourth-best time in NDSU indoor history.

After Day 1 of the heptathlon, the Bison men are in position to score big on Sunday. Senior Tony Ukkelberg stands in first with 3,153 points and junior Eric VanErp is in third with 2,939 points.

The meet resumes Sunday with the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles at 9:30 a.m. Field events start at 11:30 a.m. and noon, and running events begin at 1 p.m.
