VERMILLION, S.D. — Four North Dakota State track and field athletes clinched titles on Thursday during the first day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships at the University of South Dakota's Lillibridge Track Complex.

Benji Phillips and Alex Talley won titles on the men's side, while Maddy Nilles and Kari Wolfe won for the women's team.

Phillips threw a career-best and meet-record 246 feet, 11 inches to win the javelin. Talley posted a meet-record 228-11 in the hammer throw to defend his conference crown from 2019.

Nilles won the hammer throw title with a meet-record of 216-1. NDSU swept the top-three places in the event, with Tasha Willing finishing second and Shelby Gunnels third. Wolfe claimed the winning spot in the javelin with a mark of 179-2, which was good for another meet record. NDSU's Akealy Moton, from West Fargo, was second with a toss of 168-0.
