First shootout is in the books
UND always holds a team shootout the day before each weekend series (or single game), so today marked Shootout No. 1 for the season. The first winner was fifth-year senior Gavin Hain, who sniped all three of his shots. He outlasted Tyler Kleven (who went 2-for-3) to win it.
Numbers coming up in practice
Earlier this week, UND was forced to cancel its annual media day due to a wave of non-COVID illness that hit the team. At that point, roughly half the team was out. But there's some good news on that front: Numbers are steadily climbing at practice. It's not certain that everyone will be available for Saturday's exhibition against Manitoba, but UND had enough guys on the ice for Thursday's practice to play. The season is 48 hours away. Remember, Midco Sports will be doing a 30-minute pregame show. I'll be joining Alex Heinert before Saturday's game to discuss the upcoming season.
Jost scores against old team in preseason
It was a notable night of preseason NHL hockey for former UND players. Tyson Jost, who was traded from Colorado to Minnesota last season, scored two goals for the Wild against the Avalanche on Tuesday night. Former UND goalie Zane McIntyre of Thief River Falls stopped 13 of 13 in roughly 30 minutes of work and earned the win. Elsewhere in preseason NHL, Shane Pinto had a goal and an assist for Ottawa, Rhett Gardner had an assist for Dallas and Rocco Grimaldi had an assist for Anaheim — his fourth of the preseason.
Boeser likely to miss start of season
Former UND standout Brock Boeser may miss the start of the NHL season. The Vancouver Canucks said Boeser had surgery on his hand and is expected to be out for the next 3-4 weeks. Boeser sustained the injury in training camp.
