UND hockey to play Division-I newcomer Lindenwood next season
The Lions are coached by former UND defenseman Rick Zombo, who played alongside Fighting Hawks coach Brad Berry in college.
GRAND FORKS — Brad Berry and Rick Zombo used to roam the blue line alongside each other for UND in the 1980s.
They'll be back together in Ralph Engelstad Arena this season, but behind opposite benches this time.
UND has scheduled Division-I newcomer Lindenwood to fill out its 2022-23 slate. The Fighting Hawks and Lions will play on Jan. 6-7 in Grand Forks, according to multiple sources.
UND was originally supposed to travel to Cornell that weekend, but the Big Red have a scheduling conflict with a league game. UND and Cornell will work to find a future date for that series in Ithaca, N.Y.
Needing to quickly fill that final 2022-23 schedule spot — and not many options left on the table — UND made a call to Lindenwood, which is moving from club hockey to NCAA Division I this season.
The Lions, coached by Zombo, agreed to the series.
Zombo told the Herald last month he planned to line up about 20 Division-I games this season for Lindenwood, which is located in suburban St. Louis.
"We've had good conversations so far," Zombo said last month . "I've actually been impressed with the humility of these teams and the reception we've gotten from them. I'm excited about it."
Zombo, who played in the NHL for the St. Louis Blues, has coached Lindenwood since 2010, leading the Lions to two club national titles.
The last time UND played a team from Missouri was 1975, when it split with St. Louis University in Grand Forks. UND played St. Louis University seven times before the Billikens discontinued hockey in 1979.
The Billikens were coached by Bill Selman, a member of UND's 1963 NCAA national championship team. Selman led UND to Frozen Fours in 1967 and 1968 as head coach.
Lindenwood, which won the club hockey national title this spring, has already been working the NCAA transfer portal to help build its roster.
One of the portal adds is painfully familiar to UND — Canisius goalie Matt Ladd. In January 2019, Ladd stopped 48 of 49 shots to help Canisius stun UND 2-1 in Buffalo, N.Y.
The Lions also have added players from Bowling Green, Ferris State and NCAA-bound American International.
Lindenwood has been Division I in women's hockey for more than a decade.
UND played against the Lions on the women's side in January 2012 and 2013. Monique Lamoureux-Morando tallied eight points in the first meeting, setting a school record.
UND's other nonconference opponents for 2022-23 are Holy Cross (home), Quinnipiac (home), Minnesota (road), Bemidji State (road/home) and Arizona State (single game in Las Vegas).
Manitoba returns to the schedule
During the last 20 years, UND has typically opened its men's hockey seasons with an exhibition game against Manitoba. The coronavirus pandemic wiped that out the last two years.
The Bisons are officially set to return to Grand Forks on Oct. 1 for the season-opening exhibition game. It will be their first trip to Ralph Engelstad Arena since Oct. 5, 2019.
The Fighting Hawks have one other exhibition game on the 2022-23 slate — a New Year's Eve contest against the U.S. Under-18 Team.
