UND holds off Metro State

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Coming off a win against NCAA Division I Colorado State, Metro State saw a different look from the University of North Dakota women's basketball team.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Coming off a win against NCAA Division I Colorado State, Metro State saw a different look from the University of North Dakota women's basketball team.

"North Dakota is a lot more physical than Colorado State," Metro State coach Linda Lappe said. "We saw that on film and knew it coming in. We just didn't know to what degree."

UND's size and strength controlled the post - led by 18 points from Kierah Kimbrough - in a 64-56 victory against Metro State on Friday in the UND Women's Classic in the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

UND, 1-0, hosts Montana State-Billings at 6 tonight.

Metro State plays Minnesota State Moorhead at 4 p.m.

Despite a big second-half lead, the Sioux had to hold on late to win.

Alys Seay's short bank shot with 7 minutes, 40 seconds left gave UND a 51-31 lead.

Metro State went on a 14-1 run, then cut UND's lead to

57-53 with a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Ashley Mickens with 1:02 to go.

Kimbrough snapped the Roadrunners' run with a pair of baskets in the lane, followed by two free throws apiece from Danye Guinn and Kimbrough to seal the victory.
