Valley City scores early, claims EDC softball tournament championship

The Hi-Liners built a nine-run lead and rode it to a win over West Fargo and the Eastern Dakota Conference title.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — Valley City built a nine-run lead and then held off West Fargo's late rally for a 9-5 win in the Eastern Dakota Conference championship game on Saturday.

Valley City's Autumn McGough homered and drove in two runs and Dylann Diegel, Emma Meilke, Haily Thoreson, Emma Langemo and Jada Nelson all had hits and RBI. Hailey Schaefer went this distance, striking out nine, and got the win

West Fargo's Sophie Ochocki had two hits and drove in two runs and Ashlyn Diemert and Jadyn Iverson both had two hits and an RBI.

Valley City will be the East No. 1 seed and is slated to play West No. 4 seed Jamestown in the opening round of the state tournament at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, in Mandan. West Fargo will be the East No. 2 seed and is set to play West No. 3 Bismarck at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Grand Forks Central 5, Fargo Davies 1

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — Grand Forks Central downed Davies to clinch a spot in the Class A state tournament.

Grand Forks pitcher Reagan Fontaine went all seven innings, allowing a run on three hits and striking out seven. The Knights' Brooklynn Ramsey went 3-for-3 and drove in a run and Jillian Pulkrabek had two hits and drove in two.

Kennedy Vettel, Graciela Contreras and Alex Feldner had Davies' hits.

Grand Forks Central will be the fourth seed from the East and will face West top seed Bismarck Century on Thursday in the state tournament quarterfinals. Davies ended its season with a 9-14 overall record.

West Fargo Sheyenne 6, Fargo North 0

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — Sheyenne shut out North to advance to the Class A state softball tournament.
