VALLEY CITY, N.D. - No. 5-ranked Morningside scored three touchdowns in the first half and powered to a 35-17 victory against Valley City State in NAIA college football at Shelly Ellig Field at Lokken Stadium.

The game was the season opener for both teams and the first played on VCSU's newly installed artificial turf. Prior to the game the field was officially dedicated to Shelly Ellig, who founded Stop-N-Go convenience stores, which was a major donor for the project that cost around $1 million. Ellig passed away in October of 2010.
