DEVILS LAKE - You'll excuse the Devils Lake girls basketball team if they're having too much fun. The Firebirds are the talk of the Eastern Dakota Conference so far this season, racing out to a 10-0 record and a number two ranking in Class A girls basketball.

It hasn't been easy for Justin Klein's team, six of its first eight games were on the road, including trips to Fargo Shanley and Grand Forks Red River, traditional trouble spots for the Firebirds. Devils Lake won both games, by a combined 27 points.

" Going down to Shanley and Red River, I kind of knew we were different this year, those are places we had struggled in the past, that showed me the mentality of the team." Klein said.

Senior guard Mattea Vetsch added: " After our Shanley game, we ended up beating them by almost 20, we were moved up to second (in the state rankings), we were third before and felt like that was an eye opener for our team, people are really starting to see us, now we're second right behind Century that's a new role to take on for us."
