WATCH: Sam Westerberg and Karen Bertasso-Hughes win Fargo Marathon in WDAY's 6 PM Sports

Sam Westerberg wins first marathon after six previous marathon races.

FARGO — More than 4,700 gathered in Fargo today to race in the Fargo Marathon, half marathon and 10K.

900 of them participated in the 26.2 mile run.

Sam Westerberg crossed the finish line in the men's marathon first with a time of 2 hours 29 minutes and 50 seconds, taking his first marathon of his running career.

"I just kept telling myself nothing fancy just keep running efficiently," said Westerberg. "At 18, I took the lead, and my dad was over there on the corner and I gave him a thumbs up, and it was go time from there."

In the women's marathon, Karen Bertasso-Hughes took the top spot with a time of 2 hours, 47 minutes and six seconds.

"Competing with people and running with people, I feel like I haven't done in a while," said Bertasso-Huges. "I ran in the Olympic Trials in 2020, so just trying to get back to that level again after the pandemic, which was hard."

Brendan Sage won the finished in first in the men's half marathon, crossing the finsih line with a time of 1 hour, seven minmutes and six seconds. His fiance, Rachel King took the top place in the women's half with a time of 1 hour, 20 minutes 11 seconds.
