FARGO — There's a different energy to summer practices at Fargo North.

“Every team has their eyes set on a state championship, or making it to that game," said North head coach Adam Roland. "I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t a goal of ours.”

For the first time in 21 years, the Spartans are coming off a state semi-finals appearance. The goal now is to keep that momentum rolling into the new season.

“We have to look at ourselves as still being unproven as a team this year," the head coach added. "We also have to make sure we overcome some obstacles we do have in replacing good players that graduated.”

The Spartans have seven returning players on the defensive side of the ball and five on offense, but one of the biggest changes is under center.

“We have a new quarterback this year," said Roland. "He has experience, but he does not have experience as a starter. He really has to show us and show the team he’s ready to lead.”

“I’m excited to hand the ball off to my running back, throw it to my receivers and give my linemen good jobs, high fives and keep it rolling,” said junior quarterback Ethan Welk.

With a new role, comes new responsibilities.

“He's ready to take charge and has been taking charge," Roland said. "He's calm, cool going in and talking with coaches. Communicating with players, communicating any sorts of needs, understandings or misunderstandings. He’s been embracing the position and understanding what his role is," added the head coach.

Welk is ready for the challenge.

“We’re just going to play as hard as we can play, leave it all out on the field, and try to make it to the playoffs," said the quarterback.

North starts its season Friday, Aug. 19 against Horace. You can catch watch that game on WDAY Xtra.
