MOORHEAD — Through a tiebreaker, Minnesota State Moorhead took down Minot State 19-18 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestling dual Thursday night at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
The dual was tied 18-18 with each team winning five matches, but the Dragons were victorious by the third tiebreaker — total points won in the match.
Junior Cole Jones earned a critical win for the Dragons at 125 pounds. He was tied with Oscar Nellis at 3-3 after one period, but surged to score the next eight points for an 11-3 advantage. Jones won the match with a 13-3 major decision.
Junior Braydon Ortloff and freshman Gage Roaldson also tallied major decisions for the Dragons. Ortloff built a big lead after the first period en route to a 19-6 victory over Nathan Baca at 165. Roaldson, who was making his first dual start, jumped out to a 9-0 advantage and ended up winning 13-2 over Noah Gallardo at 174.
"The dual was a lot closer than we anticipated but I felt Cole Jones, Gage Roaldson and Braydon Ortloff did a great job in their matches," Dragons head coach Kris Nelson said in a match recap from Dragons athletics. "They wrestled aggressively and put a lot of points on the board."
MSUM improved to 1-2 overall, while Minot State fell to 0-5. MSUM is scheduled to next face Augustana at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in Sioux Falls, S.D.
