FARGO — The occasional September frost in our area, most years, is a near-32 degrees light frost. Every once in a while, our region gets a hard, killing freeze, with temperatures down into the 20s, in September, but these are far more likely in October and get increasingly common later in the month. For the Fargo area for the month of October, an average of about one-fourth of the morning low temperatures are below 30 degrees. Temperatures as cold as the single digits or below zero degrees have occurred, but rarely.
The percentage of nights colder than 30 degrees in Grand Forks during October is slightly greater, and there are many locations outside the Red River Valley, notably in river valley gorges or wooded areas, where cold, calm air tends to settle, in which hard freezes are even more common this time of year. From mid-November and through the winter months, there are relatively few daily low temperatures warmer than 30 degrees.
