FARGO — This snowy winter has produced a few records for seasonal snowfall around the region. Perhaps the most spectacular is the record winter season snowfall of 138.3 inches at the Duluth Airport. There have been six other winters in the period of record, dating back to 1941, with at least 120 inches (ten feet). Brainerd's winter snow total of 85.3 inches is also the most on record since 1948.

The National Weather Service at Bismarck has measured 100.4 inches since September. That location needs another 1.2 inches of snow to tie the record there. Grand Forks has recorded 85.2 inches of snow this winter, which is the third snowiest on record, but well shy of the record 107.4 inches set in 1996-97. Fargo's winter snow tally of 67 inches is more than average but is not threatening nor approaching any records.

John Wheeler is Chief Meteorologist for WDAY, a position he has had since May of 1985. Wheeler grew up in the South, in Louisiana and Alabama, and cites his family's move to the Midwest as important to developing his fascination with weather and climate.
