FARGO — The Northern Plains weather pattern for March is looking colder and stormier than average. This is deliberately vague because individual weather systems cannot be precisely predicted very far in advance. Instead, it can be helpful to look at what average is.
On average, more than half the days in March rise above freezing. It will likely be less than half this year, but there will probably be at least a 10 days or so of thawing afternoons scattered throughout the month, with fewer early on and more later in the month. On average measurable snow falls on five days totaling 8 inches. The general forecast suggest we should expect more than five days of snow totaling more than 8 inches. In a nutshell, a cold and snowy March will offer at least a few days of hope for spring, but will likely be mostly just an extension of winter.
