Warm weather lets locals hit the rinks

Mother Nature is gracing us with warmer than usual weather, but some might think these sunny skies are a bad thing. WDAY News Reporter Tyler Ziegler shows us how the heat is hurting some outdoor enthusiasts and what they do to work around it.

Mid 30's, sun shining, not a cloud in the sky. Sounds like a recipe for a great day outdoors right? Well, for some, this lack of cold can be killer. In order to enjoy their favorite winter activities, early mornings are a must.

"I'm riding my fat bike and I'm trying to get out here this morning before it warms up enough for it to start melting the snow cause then the trail can get pretty muddy or wet maybe I guess for certain activities it could be a deterrent," says Fargo man Bob Tolliver.

Another winter classic that's cursed by the warm weather is skating. Once the midday sun hits the ice you'll have to swap your skates for a pair of rubber boots. One group of ice rink regulars came up with an unique way to fight this issue.

"We knew that it was going to be warm so there are people that are gonna be connected on Facebook and text messaging to so we got the word out that we were gonna go early," says Moorhread man Hans-Kristof Nelson. These guys started the Facebook group F/M Rink Rats to keep people posted on best time and place to drop the puck.

"You know people are getting connected on Facebook to find good groups of guys and gals to play hockey with to get outdoors and recreate and even when this isn't open on a warm day people still get out and get connected and get out," says Hans. So even when the warm weather works against us, these folks prove that in our neck of the woods, will is stronger than weather.

F/M Outdoor Rink Rats is a public Facebook group for anyone that enjoys the outdoor rinks.
