Weather Wednesday: Different winds bring different changes to weather

Winter storms will be upon us in the near future, but not every storm brings the same conditions.

There are two systems that are defined by meteorologists as an Alberta Clipper and a Colorado Low. An Alberta Clipper is a fast-moving system from northern Canada. It brings the drier, fluffier snow to parts of the area, as well as gusty wind speeds and bone-chilling temperatures on the backside of this low-pressure system.

Another trickier system comes from our south. It's called a Colorado Low. It develops on the eastern side of the Rockies and it is hard to track more than a few days out in advance. These systems soak up more moisture, and that higher moisture content results in a wetter and heavier snow type compared to the Alberta clipper systems to our north.

These highly varied systems mean we could have a wide range of precipitation types of that rain and rain-snow mix at times to our south.
