WeatherTalk: Avoiding a spring flood just matter of timing

Weather Talk.jpg

The second crest on the Red River at the gauge in downtown Fargo will be lower than the first, and both crests will be below 29 feet and nowhere near big trouble for Fargo and Moorhead. However, the backup and overland flooding on and around the Sheyenne River between West Fargo and Harwood is very high this weekend and more than a minor nuisance.

Downstream, Grand Forks is doing fine other than a few bridge closings which is about par most spring seasons. At Oslo, the water is high enough to cut off the town, but this, too, has happened more than a few times before.

The spring flood has turned out to be far less than the disaster some had feared. However, had the moisture from the April 1-2 storm fallen a couple of weeks earlier and been added to the original river crests, the spring flood of 2020 would have been a lot more work and a lot more expensive.
