FARGO — A winter storm is expected to hit the Upper Midwest in the days following Christmas, potentially bringing colder temperatures and new snow here along the way.
The storm is expected to develop in the region on Wednesday, Dec. 26, and continue into Thursday, Dec. 27. John Wheeler, WDAY's chief meteorologist, said it will likely hit all of Minnesota, eastern South Dakota and eastern and central North Dakota .
The storm will impact highways for anyone in the region traveling later this week. National Weather Service meteorologist Nicholas Carletta said those impacts could affect driving conditions on Interstate 29 going south from Fargo and Interstate 94 heading west toward Bismarck and southeast toward Minneapolis.
"It's definitely a concern for travel," Wheeler said.

Light flurries are expected in the region before this storm gets to the area on Wednesday, Carletta said.
For those hoping for a white Christmas, Wheeler said Monday, Dec. 24, that 1 or 2 inches of snow was expected between Monday night and Tuesday morning, Dec. 25.
Carletta said current weather models show the winter storm is likely to bring in about 6 inches of snow and is expected to have the most significant impact late Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.
The temperature will begin to drop during the storm, with the high on Friday, Dec. 28, dropping into the single digits.
Both Wheeler and Carletta said the storm will also bring stronger winds later in the week, and Wheeler said the wind chill might drop below zero on Friday.
