West Fargo and West Fargo Sheyenne wrapped up all but one spring sports season in a busy weekend with four state tournaments. Here's a look at the tournament runs on both sides of the state in images:
Sheyenne captures historic state baseball title
West Fargo Sheyenne produced its best season ever and made program and school history Saturday at Mandan’s Veterans Memorial Field.
The Mustangs accomplished their season-long mission of a first-ever state title with a dominant 11-1 win over Fargo Shanley in the North Dakota Class A state baseball championship. Not only was it the program’s first state crown, it was the first state championship for any West Fargo Sheyenne boys team.
The second-seeded Mustangs reached the championship with a statement-making 9-0 quarterfinal win over Minot, and used a late run to get past No. 1 West seed Bismarck Legacy with a 4-2 win in the semifinals.
Packers capture consolation championship baseball title
West Fargo brought home consolation championship hardware from the Class A state baseball tournament.
The Packers responded to an opening-round loss to Dickinson with two decisive wins to capture fifth place.
They beat Bismarck Century 7-0 in the consolation semifinals and downed Grand Forks Red River 10-0 in Saturday’s consolation championship.
Sheyenne’s Gu wins first state singles title
West Fargo Sheyenne junior Mimi Gu beat Mandan senior Elizabeth Felderman 6-4, 6-4 to win the state girls tennis singles title Saturday at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks.
It was the first singles title for Gu, who didn't drop a set during the singles tournament. Gu won back-to-back state doubles titles in 2018 and 2019. She also won a team title with the Mustangs in 2019 as a freshman.
Gu won 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-2 during Friday's first round and quarterfinals. She beat Shanley's Maddie Abbott 6-0, 6-1 on Saturday in the semifinals.
In the team race, Sheyenne placed fifth with a 3-2 victory over Bismarck Century to win the consolation crown.
Sheyenne takes home third-place finish in girls soccer
West Fargo Sheyenne captured third place for a second consecutive season with a 1-0 win over Fargo Shanley-Oak Grove on Saturday in the North Dakota state girls soccer tournament at Cushman Field in Grand Forks.
It was the second game the Mustangs played that day. Their semifinal against Fargo Davies started at 10:10 p.m. Friday and ended at 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
The Mustangs grabbed a 3-0 win over Jamestown in the quarterfinals, but lost in double overtime to the Eagles in the late-night semifinal.
Sheyenne head coach Jon Melendez-Soloaga was named the coach of the year by the North Dakota High School Coaches Association.
West Fargo nabs sixth-place soccer finish
The Packers placed sixth at the state girls soccer tournament with a 2-0 loss to Mandan in Saturday's consolation championship.
West Fargo moved to the consolation bracket after a 4-0 loss to eventual state champion Minot in the quarterfinals. The Packers squeaked out a 4-3 win over Bismarck High in the consolation semis to reach the fifth-place match.
Packers end softball season with consolation championship
It wasn’t the plaque they were used to, but the Packers left the North Dakota Class A state softball tournament with some hardware. West Fargo claimed the consolation championship with a 10-9 win over Jamestown on Saturday at Lincoln Softball Field in Mandan.
For just the second time ever, a team besides the perennial power West Fargo won the state softball championship.
The Packers were handed a rare tournament loss by Bismarck High in the quarterfinals, and knocked out of championship play with the 7-5 loss.
The Packers throttled Grand Forks Central 16-1 in Friday’s consolation semifinals to reach the consolation final.
Mustangs drop two at state softball
West Fargo Sheyenne was bumped to the consolation bracket after a 5-2 loss to eventual state champion Dickinson in the quarterfinals. The Mustangs next lost to Jamestown in the consolation semifinals, and were eliminated from the tournament.
